The “Cold day in hell” cold IPA (6.8% ABV, 55 IBU) is an IPA that is fermented with lager yeast at a low temperature. The conventional ale yeast fermentation temperature is around 20 degrees, while the lager yeast usually works at a low temperature of around 10-14 degrees.
We included rice in the grist to create a crisp dryness. This proved quite troublesome for our brewhouse (thus the beer name)! This is an IPA fermented slightly cooler with Lager Yeast. Something special happens when lager yeast meets big bold American hops (Strata, Mosaic and Amarillo).
The results are big, complex aromas and flavors!Aroma is full of ripe fruits, guava and melon with touch of dankness. Flavor is big and fruity with a clean maltiness and bitter finish. Yeast character is minimal as expected with lager yeast. This is a big, dry and moderately bitter beer, a true West Coast IPA with an interesting tropical twist!
